July 22-Old Fashioned
This along with the gimlet is likely my dad’s favourite cocktail. This was the first drink I learnt how to make. It was learning this that got me into bartending. The method of me making the old fashioned has changed quite a bit. I used to do it the Wisconsin or steakhouse method and with any old whiskey I could find. When I say the steakhouse method I mean starting it with muddled fruit. I have since learned that that is not the best way of doing this coocktail in my opinion. This statement is not meant to discredit people who like it this way by the way. Now I do it the true method with 100 proof rye spercifically.
The old fashioned is one of the most classic cocktails out there that have spawned a myriad of variations suchg as the Monte Varlo and Improved Whiskey Cocktail. When the word cocktail was first coined it literally meant spirit, bitters, water and sugar. Guess what? That’s the main recipe for an old fashioned.
